The TueDo List: Botox for Teeth + Lotus Returns + Bono is Sorry
And the case for dating men less than half your age
THIS WEEK
📖 READ: This great, in-depth interview with Iman, about Iman (and not her late husband). If you grind your teeth in your sleep, Botox might be the answer. On breast cancer awareness: We need “less pink and more action.” A pro-life Missouri woman was denied an emergency life-saving abortion, so she filmed a campaign ad for her state senator’s opponent. TueNighter Cindy Gallop explains why she only dates much younger men.
🤣 LOL: Punk company gives one week of paid medical leave to employees breaking in new Doc Martens. That box you set down for a second to become permanent decor. Bono, whose memoir we are definitely not buying, apologizes for that time he put an unwanted U2 album on our iPhones.
👀 LOOK: Artists staged a Mahsa Amini protest at the Guggenheim. Photos of Diwali celebrations around the world. Knitters rejoice: This little widget helps you find the perfect color yarn. Can we get one for paint next?
🎧 LISTEN: “Bless This Mess” by U.S. Girls, “Just Like Me” by Amber Arcades, and “Backburner” by Suzie True.
📺 WATCH
Now: If you need some stand-up comedy: Fortune Feimster: Good Fortune (Netflix).
Friday: Key & Peele are “demon brothers” in animated Wendell & Wild (Netflix), Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver star in reproductive rights drama Call Jane (Theaters), and Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Anthony Hopkins star in Armageddon Time (Theaters).
Sunday: Season 2 of The White Lotus (HBO).
TUENIGHT 10: Laura Galloway, Author
Age: 50.
Basic bio: Laura is the author of Dálvi, Six Years on the Arctic Tundra, a memoir about the time she spent in a Sámi reindeer-herding village and the lifelong backstory that led her there.
Beyond the bio: Being over 40 has brought me meaning. I wrote a memoir because I finally had the experience to examine my life in a more thoughtful way. Time and age show us what matters and who matters. Discernment is our superpower!
What makes you a grown-ass lady?
I’m a grown-ass lady because I’ve survived to this age and (hopefully) have remained open to the world.
Here’s her TueNight 10:
On the nightstand: Magnesium CBD lotion, which is great for tired muscles before bed; a raven nightlight (the raven holds the bulb in its beak); and a copy of The Beekeeper of Aleppo, one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking books I’ve read in a long time.
Can’t stop/won’t stop: Well, I do have OCD, so you’ve just described my brain. I can’t stop and won’t stop my real and profound love of nature and constant need to be in it. This is something that really developed while living in the Arctic.
Jam of the minute: Sofia Jannok, an amazing Sámi singer songwriter who sings in Sámi language. My favourite song of hers is “Viviann” and I could listen to it endlessly!
Thing I miss: Sometimes I actually miss life before the internet. As much as it’s the most amazing tool for connection, I’m so glad to have grown up without it. Remember the thrill of waiting for a letter, a phone call, or traveling somewhere with no idea what you’d find or where you’d stay? That sense of anticipation is something that is hard to come by now.
‘80s crush: I’ll just say it. Rick Springfield.
Current crush: Brian May.
Latest fav find: Two things. I have Arctic reindeer herding dogs and we now live in England. The dogs shed constantly. I love the Furminator because it takes out hot undercoats and you can use it on cats, too. The second find is a service called Parcel Monkey. I use it to ship everything and it’s insanely cheap.
Last thing you lost: Sunglasses. It’s always sunglasses.
Best thing that happened recently: The fox that lives under a shed nearby had pups. So now every evening at twilight we have a gaggle of fox pups running through the garden. They’re riveting.
Looking forward to: Watching the last episodes of Better Call Saul.
STORY: I Don’t Fit In. And Neither Do My Halloween Costumes.
By Erica Hornung
My motto for Halloween costumes is: If it fits in the car, it’s not worth doing. I go big or go home, and it MUST be made with my own two hands.
Since I was little, I’ve loved making things. It doesn’t matter what: cookies, a sweater, a film. I was the kind of kid who spent hours alone building sandcastles on construction sites or crafting elaborate fantasy worlds inhabited by Barbies and Star Wars action figures. The kind of kid who devours a Nancy Drew in one sitting. The kind of kid you don’t realize is actually in the house until she shows up gushing blood from her head or finger. To me, these wounds were minor sacrifices in the pursuit of making stuff…
Sponsored: Gen-X Gifts We Dig
Many folx know Jennifer Dziura from her advice column, but did you know she has a whole online shop of snarky, fun, fabulous gifts? Jen runs Fem Power Gifts, a store that’s perfect for your early holiday shopping. Think stickers, kitchen goodies, jewelry with sentiments like “hustle for justice” and “smash the patriarchy” with a generous side of 80s and 90s nostalgia. Here are our five faves:
Cards: Her greeting cards might be my favorite, especially this so called birthday card. I’m tempted to send all my friends a note about the two kinds of people in this world.
Tea Towel: A “This is My Protest” tea towel is right up my alley for this election season.
Oven Mitt: Considering how many times I’ve burned my fingers in the kitchen lately, this delightfully colorful oven mitt might be a bit prophetic.
Jewelry: So many handmade button earrings. So hard to choose!
Passport Case: This 80s Hot Jams Passport Case, styled like a cassette tape, is definitely the way to bring some retro into your travel.

I saw an excerpt of Bono's memoir in The New Yorker and was moved to learn he lost his mother at age fourteen. (I lost my mom at eleven.) I thought, no wonder I loved "Boy" so much, the intense but non-explicit emotion pouring out was relatable and cathartic to me without knowing why. I'll buy his memoir! (Didn't have an apple phone so didn't get to be mad about the unwanted album)
