This Week
90s icons, Alanis Morissette and Diablo Cody (Image via The Cut)
Diablo Cody, er, Brooke Maurio, reflects on her long career, staying off Twitter, and working with Alanis Morrisette on Jagged Little Pill, the musical. Cancel culture claims its latest victim: milk. An oldie but goodie about managing the pressures around family togetherness during the holidays. Do ya think it’s sexy...to play with model trains? An important piece on navigating the age of disinformation. As more clinics close, self-managed medical abortions at home may be the wave of the future. Hold onto your hats...there’s a new trailer for Cats. This is probably the best Humans of New York post ever.
Obsessed: Mea Culpa...I love my high-waisted jeans
Last week, Margit and I met for dinner before going to comedian Megan Stalter perform at Union Hall. As we sipped our cocktails, I told her that I had a confession to make: I was wearing — and loving — a new pair of high-waisted jeans. Dun-dun-DUN! She looked me in the eye and said something I did not expect to hear...“ME TOO.” So, why were we confessing this in somewhat hushed tones? Well...we may have been a little harsh on this trend back in Spring of 2017 (search “high-waisted” or “mom jeans” in TueNighters), and I may have said in this very spot of a newsletter that March, “This recent ad campaign from Everlane put me over the edge, because they describe these high-waisted monstrosities as “the most flattering pant you’ll ever try.” Flattering to what? Your camel toe?” Well, slap my ass and call me Humphrey, because I am rocking these bad boys now. Coincidentally, Margit and I both found our “mom jean” bliss at Madewell, although these are way more flattering (yes! flattering!) than what our generation thinks of when we hear that term.

2. Can't stop/won't stop: Watching Law & Order SVU if I come across it while channel-surfing. Playing Scrabble on my phone.
3. Jam of the minute: The Replacements, “Color Me Impressed.”

NOVEMBER THEME: AMENDS
Editor's Note: As the year careens toward closure and we start the holiday run, gratitude and thankfulness are on our minds. But what about gratitude's shadow sister, forgiveness? This month we're making AMENDS.
Self-Acceptance as a Woman Meant Starting with My Hair
By Stephanie Battaglino
"Unless you have walked a mile in my heels, it’s very difficult to explain what it is like to wake up every morning of your life knowing — really knowing — on a very visceral level that something’s just not aligned correctly. Something’s a little off – askance, as it were. It became quite apparent to me as I reached my teenage years that this was most definitely NOT the body that I signed up for."
