The TueDo List: Gaga + Turkey Hotline + Holiday Giveaway for You!
Plus more fun gift ideas and a treat for Violent Femmes fans
THIS WEEK
📖 READ: Betsey Johnson’s new beauty line, at 79. Thanksgiving advice from a Turkey Hotline employee. (“Turkey Hotline” is our new band name.) Getting personal with Iman. Dionne Warwick’s tweets are now an art exhibit. To every woman who spent her 20s apologizing.
👀 LOOK: This graphical depiction of grief is perfect. LEGO x Adidas is something we didn’t know we needed. Can’t make it to DC? The Blacksonian is online. Stunning photos of Lizzo, Nikole Hannah-Jones, and Simone Biles in the Essence holiday issue.
🎁 GIFTS:
How cute is this itty-bitty IKEA key and coin purse?
RBG, MLK, Frida, and other awesome paint-by-number kits.
A small donation lets you take a fun quiz to get the perfect book rec for that impossible-to-shop-for person.
🤣 LOL: No, we are not showing up to Thanksgiving dinner with a case of toilet paper or a turkey chainsaw, but we will avoid these conversations. They put jokes on clothing labels?? New career idea: Professional slapper. The Count singing Violent Femmes is everythingeverythingeverythingeverything.
📺 WATCH
Now: Black and Missing, a documentary series from Geeta Gandbhir and Soledad O’Brien about the uphill battle to bring awareness to Black missing person cases. (HBO Max)
Wednesday: Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in House of Gucci. (Theaters)
Thursday: DMX: Don’t Try to Understand (HBO Max) and Peter Jackson’s six-hour docuseries The Beatles: Get Back (Disney+)
RECAP: Photos from “Pay Me: Stories of Gen-X Women, Ageism & Equity”
This was our first edition of TueNight Live since the “before times” and it was SO good. We saw — and hugged — some of you in person (fully-vaxxed, of course) and many of you on the livestream (watch the full replay here!). Five storytellers, and members of the audience, shared their own stories on pay, ageism and equity — e.g. “No one would say ___ to a man my age” - see the hilarious (and 🤦♀️😮🤯) answers. Big thanks to Disrupt Aging from AARP for recognizing the importance of this topic and sponsoring this event.
STORY: As Age 60 Nears, I’ve Had to Do the Math
By Marcelle Karp
“The fury of inequity that reverberated through my veins in my twenties has turned into a rage of indignation here in my fifties. Weathering bullshit in service to a mathematical equation of dollars and sense dictating my choices — college looming, my sixties in my face, no partner to help absorb the anxiety that drenches me constantly. I face the suffocation of the patriarchy on the daily, clinging to my feminist legacy, a shield keeping my very fine ass guarded — but rarely protected.”
