OBSESSED: Tips for Stay-at-Home Feet
By Margit Detweiler
In these stay-at-home days of rough-looking feet and perilous pedicures, I wondered how we could better keep our feet looking fabulous — or, at least not crackly and falling apart like mine. It’s bad, people. Turns out staying at home and not giving the feet as much of a daily workout can lead to not-so-great foot health, so we need to get them moving (a few exercises here you might try).
I’ve long been a proponent in this newsletter of the Samba Foot Fetish Cream which smells like a sweet suntan. But I needed more advice, TueNighter-style. So I asked our trusty community about their tips, tricks, creams and products for keeping their hoofs in tip-top shape. And as always, please check with your doctor before trying anything too wacky, we only present for your informational pleasure.
“Foot bath, scrub with a pumice or a scrubby glove, foot cream (I actually like Gold Bond hand cream), trim and file nails, push back and trim cuticles and surrounding skin (if necessary), clean nails with a little polish remover, paint base clear layer, paint color layer, top coat. Relax with feet up and let dry.” — Laura Hamilton
“The only thing I do right now is apply O'Keefe's foot cream at night. It works great. Solves the dry, cracking issue and softens everything up nicely. I notice a big difference vs regular lotion, even a heavier cream.” — Nicolle Anderson Pillartz
“I just remembered I have a packet of Baby Feet that I never used. I'll keep you posted on that progress—sure to be disgusting.” — Judy McGuire
“When people have super dry, flaking skin, I worked with a dermatologist who recommended Crisco (the huge tub) nightly. Cheaper and works within a week.” — Michelle Johnson
“Amope callus smoother and Heel Rescue with socks at night.” — Paty Huthert
“I just bought this off of Amazon and it has CHANGED my LIFE. I have horrible cracked, calloused feet and this got rid of all the junk... then throw on some thick cream and cotton socks, and you're good to go. LOVE it.”— Jennifer Rice Abrevaya
“I need a damn belt sander.” — Margaret Phelan
“Mustard seed oil (hard to find, but Amazon has some) is beyond amazing for cracked feet.” — Michelle Mangen
“A nurse in my building told me that Aquaphor mixed with a little Maalox makes the perfect hand cream if you’ve been washing your hands all day long. I’ve been using it on my feet and it’s terrific.” — Amy Burton
“Vaseline and socks.” — Storm Amber Smit
“This is hella useful. Use dry for best results.” — Cristin McConnell Bock
“I can’t even reach my feet anymore.” — Nicole Hamilton

TUENIGHT 10: Kathy Valentine
Age: 61
Bio: Kathy Valentine has been writing songs and playing in bands non-stop for 45 years — lots of un-famous ones, and one that made music history: the Go-Go’s. And now she has released a book: All I Ever Wanted: A Rock n’ Roll Memoir from University of Texas Press with an accompanying soundtrack.
Beyond the Bio: If I’m lucky enough to get a standard issue life span, then I’m acutely aware that I’m on the “other” side of the bell curve and feel a sense of urgency to keep productive—hyper motivated to create, and live each day in a very present and fully realized way. And besides getting shit done, and getting it done better than I ever have, I’m rocking and rolling and being the biggest not-giving-AF goofball I’ve ever been.
What makes you a grown-ass lady? Becoming a mom right before turning 44 made me a grown-ass lady. Before that, I was still a baby-ass lady.
Here’s her TueNight 10:
1. On the nightstand: It might be easier to say what’s NOT on my nightstand, but I’ll try: Books, laptop, notebooks, pens, phone, diffuser, essential oils, chargers, bottled water, and supplements. It’s big enough to clutter up.
2. Can't stop/won't stop: Queso.
3. Jam of the minute: New album by X: Alphabetland.
4. Thing I miss: My young-ass legs. I didn’t appreciate smooth perfect legs when I had them, I never even once wore hot pants or short shorts, hardly ever mini-skirts. I’d wear that shit every day now if I had those legs.
5. 80s crush: 80s crush became my boyfriend in ‘84! Clem Burke, the drummer of Blondie.
6. Current crush: Mikel Rouse, bf of my 60s.
7. Latest fave find: Michael Sealey talking me to sleep on You Tube.
8. Last thing you lost: Amethyst necklace.
9. Best thing that happened recently: Hanging out with my 17-year-old daughter day-in and day-out since pandemic.
10. Looking forward to: Going to NYC eventually.

STORY: Unmasked: The Day I Visited Dad in the AIDS Ward
artwork by Jenny Laden 2018
Twenty-five years ago, just as Magic Johnson announced to the world that he was HIV positive, artist Jenny Laden, then a teenager, went to see her father who was also HIV positive. In her 2018 TueNight essay, “Unmasked: The Day I Visited Dad in the AIDS Ward,” Jenny recalls a different era when some of us wore masks.
Congrats to all the TueNighter family grads!
