STORY: The Narcissism of Grief
By Thaler Pekar
As I wrote and officiated three memorial services during seven weeks, I thought of the pain and anger that can be foisted upon the grieving. The world of the grieving can be intimate and narrow and harmful words can ricochet like bullets, causing repeat wounds. People mean well, but their words can often rob the grieving of peace.
TUENIGHT 10: Patti Roberts
Age: 56
Basic bio: Patti Roberts has been a YMCA Senior Director for eight years. She has a passion for enriching others’ lives.
Beyond the bio: I am increasingly aware that my journey does not look like most. I count myself successful and my steps ordered and I follow the light of my own path. Never in my young mind would I have imagined all that I am doing at this age.
What makes you a grown-ass lady? Acknowledging that I am the master of how I receive this life. Changing my perspective changes the narrative.
On the nightstand: A picture of my daughter.
Can't stop/won't stop: Growing.
Jam of the minute: PSA by JayZ.
Thing I miss: Innocence, honesty, and integrity.
'80s crush: Kadeem Hardison.
Current crush: Can I pick myself??? LOL!
Latest fave find: A gorgeous peignoir! (My greatest finds are generally thrifted or from antique markets.)
Last thing you lost: Friends along the way that I thought would be there forever... even though I hold them in my heart, our paths have separated.
Best thing that happened recently: Taking a long, strong look at my path and deciding that it was time for change... yet again. And while this may make me sound like a carefree wanderlust, I am super grounded and productive. Imagine if you can, being both at the same time. This is how you know that I will breathe new life and innovation into the companies that I work for. I thrive off of it. I am a "disrupter."
Looking forward to: Each and every day!! New journeys await!!!
RESCHEDULED FOR 3/29: How to Break Up with Your Friends
Friendships can be the source of so much joy and support but over time, friends may drift apart for one reason or another. Also, Covid — right? The pandemic has made many of us reevaluate those we want close to us and those we don't.
In How to Break Up with Your Friends, author and psychotherapist Erin Falconer shows us how to navigate and nurture friendships that are meaningful and let go of those that aren't. It's a great book and we're excited to talk to Erin!
Join us March 29 at 8pm ET (on Crowdcast) as Margit chats with Erin about cultivating deep friendships, setting boundaries and, as the title implies, bidding adieu.
This event is free, but you’ll need to register in advance.
Embrace the spring showers, TueNighters!
