This Week
Rhoda and Mary, BFFs (Image via Washington Post)
A fitting homage to the strong female friendship between Mary Richards and Rhoda Morganstern, following Valerie Harper’s recent death. Kimberly Teehee will be the first delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from The Cherokee Nation. We’re mesmerized by the beauty of this Monarch butterfly takeover of a farm in Maine. This piece says Botox and other fillers are on the way out (good!), and yet most of the photos are of women with no lines in their faces (annoying!). Linda Hamilton rocks her natural beauty at 62 as she brings Sarah Connor back to the screen. Forget the Oxford comma debate, the AP Stylebook has changed the rules on hyphens. The Transparent finale will be a musical, airing on September 27th. Just as he did in Puerto Rico, chef José Andrès is helping out in the Bahamas in the wake of hurricane Dorian, and you can help support his efforts by donating to World Central Kitchen. We'll miss Leslie Jones on SNL.
Next TueNight Live! #DayofAction
Every year on September 17th, National Constitution & Citizenship Daygoes largely unnoticed in this country. But we noticed!
This year, TueNight is partnering with Feed Our Democracy to co-host an evening of storytelling and more (much more), with proceeds going to Hello Neighbor, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit that helps recently resettled refugee families.
Storytellers will share refugee, immigration and citizenship stories and we'll write welcome cards and make donations to help the families. Delicious snacks provided by Brooklyn's own R&D Foods, and of course we'll have wine and Hint water on hand!
#DayofAction will be a nationwide event with events across the country. Join us on this important day, to hear inspiring stories, take action for refugees who need your help, and enjoy the usual TueNight vibe with likeminded women. Let's clink glasses and do some good!

Taiia welcoming a friend on the rooftop of Westlight in Brooklyn
Age: 46
Basic bio: Taiia (Tee-eye-yah) is an award-winning author, content creator, writing coach and speaker. She loves connecting with teens about life, love and the pursuit of happiness. Her book, Famous! How to Be the Star of Your Show: A Teen Girl’s Guide to Embracing Her Fabulous Self, reminds young women "to believe in their flyness." Her favorite T-shirt says: “The dopest writers are from Brooklyn.”
Beyond the Bio: “I finally feel super comfortable in my skin. I know who I am, and I’m not ashamed that I love me something fierce.”
1. On the nightstand: Prayers for Difficult Times, essential oils and a talisman my grandmother gave me.
2. Can't stop/won't stop: Wearing red lipstick, inserting classic movie lines into daily conversation, going to therapy, laughing at myself and talking about the importance of HBCUs
3. Jam of the minute: “Talk” by Khalid.
4. Thing I miss: The Golden Age of hip-hop, lyricists and brilliant flows.
5. 80s crush: Ralph Tresvant from New Edition.
6. Current crush: Lena Waithe, Ava DuVernay and Robin Thede.
7. Will whine about: Long lines. I will leave any store if the line is obscene, which is why Instacart is bae.
8. Will wine about: I wish I could impress a sommelier, but I cannot because I’m about that tequila life. Herradura silver, preferred.
9. Best thing that happened recently: My husband built my dope ass office. Being married to a carpenter has its privileges.
10. Looking forward to: Planning and hosting my next Write & Sip
Story: While Writing A Book About Self Worth, I Had to Learn How to Practice It
By Carla Zanoni
Earlier this summer, after learning a writing teacher I wanted to study with in Cape Cod wasn’t available, I asked my literary coach and yoga instructor to help me put together a personalized writing retreat that I could enjoy at home in New York City. Instead of escaping to spend time writing in some remote bucolic place, I’d find peace in the chaos of Manhattan. I spend a lot of time focusing on fleeing where I live in order to get in touch with — or to reclaim — another part of myself. And although I love a good island or mountain vacation, all too many times I’ve come home and the sense of peace I enjoyed evaporates as I try to shove my suitcases onto the closing doors of the subway after a long flight home.
