📖 READ: The abortion stories we didn’t tell. Cold water swimming can help with depression and menopausal turmoil. Money tips for Gen Xers in a shaky economy. How two women with the exact same name became best friends. My adult children are moving out, and “I may be getting a little giddy.” Annie Lennox still gets stage fright, but enjoys singing with her musician daughter. Dear Gen X, can we talk honestly about aging? The women who built grunge.

👀 LOOK: The new David Bowie Barbie doll sold out in like two days. Meanwhile, Barbiecore is the new black? Kim Fields isn’t too keen on reboots. We’d like a Loud Women Festival on this side of the pond, please and thank you.

🎧 LISTEN: Your personal playlist to help you escape from Vecna and the Upside Down. An ode to Mary J. Blige and the definitive “Real Love.” Earth.fm: Like Spotify, but for natural soundscapes.

🤣 LOL: How men think women’s bodies work. Some recipes to make when you lose your bodily autonomy. Our new skin serum is anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-old, and deeply ageist to its core. Don’t watch this Maya Rudolph Loot skit until the kids have left the room.

IT’S ME, MARGIT: Gen-X Reflections on Life Under Roe

A closeup of a black pin that says "MIND YOUR OWN UTERUS" on a pale blue denim jacket

The Sunday after Roe was struck down, I met up with my friend Sulyn for dinner in Brooklyn. She arrived sweaty and amped up from the Pride parade here in NYC — all tank top, rainbow bandana, and brightly colored shades. I haven’t seen Sulyn since she moved to Colorado four years ago and she practically bounced into my arms. We hugged for a long time and then we shook our heads in disbelief and sadness.

“20 years ago I was part of a human chain that blocked off the Holland Tunnel to protest the gag rule. We got arrested, but it did we feel like we made a difference…. It wasn’t for shit.”

“No no, it was, it was — you made a difference.” I tried to console her, to console us. But even I wasn’t sure.

TUENIGHT 10: Juliana Nash, Musician and Educator

A woman in a black and white polka dot top looking at the camera and not smiling

Basic bio: Juliana is an empty nester, rocker, and songwriting and singing mama. After leading a 4-piece rock band for a decade and owning a music venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, she now teaches voice to teenagers at the Rock Academy in Woodstock.

Beyond the bio: At 45 I had a full-on identity crisis which led to alcohol addiction and depression. I had stopped singing and writing music to be a mom and I suffered because I gave up what truly fulfilled me. I became a mom at 37 and 40 so most of my adult life I did music and followed my dream. Now, at 58, I am sober. I am happy. My children are in college and doing great. I am releasing a new album in June of 2022.

What makes you a grown-ass lady? To be a grown-ass lady you have to uncover, discover and discard. AND GROW.

Here’s her TueNight 10:

  2. Can't stop/won't stop: Writing music and singing.

  3. Jam of the minute: “Tymps” by Fiona Apple.
