Weekend Watch — 10/28/22
Finding common ground through humor + a coming-of-age tale about prejudice + an infuriatingly necessary reproductive rights drama...
Hey there, TueNighters! As you know, the TueNight team publishes an ah-mazing list of movie releases, series drops, and tv shows in our weekly TueDo List newsletter.
Here in the Weekend Watch, we’re able to take a deeper dive into our recommendations and chat a little more about what we’re watching — let’s go!
Here are this week's picks:
Call Jane (Theaters) — when 1968 suburban housewife Joy's (Elizabeth Banks) pregnancy leads to a life-threatening heart condition, she must navigate an all-male medical establishment unwilling to terminate her pregnancy in order to save her life. Her journey for a solution leads her to Virginia (Sigourney Weaver), an independent visionary fiercely committed to women’s health, and Gwen (Wunmi Mosaku), an activist who dreams of a day when all women will have access to abortion, regardless of their ability to pay. Joy is so inspired by their work, she decides to join forces with them, putting every aspect of her life on the line.
Five states have abortion on the ballot on Tuesday, November 8th: Vote, VOte, VOTe, VOTE!
Fortune Feimster: Good Fortune (Netflix) — affable, charismatic, and one-of-a-kind, Fortune Feimster is a standup comedian, writer, and actor who uses her confessional comedy to bring people together. Through laughter and storytelling, Fortune shows audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and sexual orientations that common ground is only a joke or two away.
Fun Fact: Fortune is featured in the voice acting cast of Mindy Kaling's upcoming adult animated series “Velma” dropping on HBO Max in 2023.
Armageddon Time (Theaters) — a film written, directed, and produced by James Gray, inspired by his upbringing in Queens, New York, during the 1980s. After American Jewish student Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) and his African-American friend Johnny (Jaylin Webb) are caught smoking cannabis, Paul is sent to his older brother's private school. Despite facing prejudice, Paul's family do their best to try and support him. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and the incredible Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Wendell & Wild (Netflix) — an animated tale about scheming demon brothers Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Peele) who enlist the aid of 13-year-old Kat Elliot (Lyric Ross) to summon them to the Land of the Living. But what Kat demands in return leads to a brilliantly bizarre and comedic adventure like no other, an animated fantasy that defies the law of life and death, all told through the handmade artistry of stop motion.
Critics Consensus (via Rotten Tomatoes): Boasting visual marvels to match its ambitious and inclusive story, Wendell & Wild is a spooky treat for budding horror fans.
The White Lotus | Season 2 (HBO) — first premiered in 2021, the series explored the mishaps of various guests at a lush Hawaii resort. Jennifer Coolidge and Jon Gries return, both reprising their roles as Tanya and Greg, as the anthology series packs up and heads for Italy. A new White Lotus resort means new guests, including Michael Imperioli (Sopranos), Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Rec), Meghann Fahey (Next to Normal, Miss Sloan), F. Murray Abraham (Academy-award winner, Amadeus) and more.
Shingles shot. I’m alternating between Cabinet of Curiosities and some true crime show about stalkers. But mostly everything just hurts.
Hi Liz, I look forward to your email every Friday! Loved Good Fortune! What a great ending. Biggie's cuteness is off the charts!
