Weekend Watch — 10/7/22
Investigating cold cases in Alaska...speaking your truth out loud... goodbye Derry Girls... and where are all the women conductors at?
Hey there, TueNighters! As you know, the TueNight team publishes an ah-mazing list of movie releases, series drops, and tv shows in our weekly The TueDo List newsletter.
Here in the Weekend Watch, we’re able to take a deeper dive into our recommendations and chat a little more about what we’re watching — we think it’s a fab feature and one that GALs in our community would enjoy reading, so we’re sending it (and opening up comments) to EVERYONE!
As always, thank you so much for your support!
Here are this week's picks:
TÁR (Theaters) — Cate Blanchett plays composer Lydia Tár, the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. We meet Tár at the height of her career, as she's preparing both a book launch and a much-anticipated live performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Over the ensuing weeks, her life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way. The result is a searing examination of power and its impact and durability in today's society.
In case you were wondering: Lydia Tár is a fictional character, which got me thinking — where are all the women conductors at? This interesting article tells us about 10 women conductors we should know.
Alaska Daily | Season 1 (ABC) — stars Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, a fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption. The first season focuses on the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in Alaska.
Newsworthy note: 48-year-old Hilary Swank announced this week that she’s pregnant and expecting twins with her husband Philip Schneider!
Luckiest Girl Alive (Netflix) — Mila Kunis stars as Ani FaNelli, a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life.
Based on her 2015 novel, writer and executive producer Jessica Knoll revealed that Luckiest Girl Alive sexual assault storyline is based on her own high school experience — honestly, this one’s going to be hard to watch but Mila Kunis is a fave of mine and I admire the author’s courage to speak her truth… out loud.
Derry Girls | Season 3 Finale (Netflix) — Set against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland Troubles, this comedy series follows a group of friends as they navigate their teens in the early 1990s.
Critics consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: Parting is such sweet sorrow, but Derry Girls' final season promises to milk as many laughs as it can before viewers say a fond farewell to this lovable band of miscreants.
