Weekend Watch — 11/25/22
An origin story for breakaway pants + the evolution of criminal minds + the Gen-X Addams Family comeback we didn’t know we wanted...
Happy Friday, GALs! The weekend's here and you know what that means, right? Time to sit back, take a breath, and catch up with what’s on our watch list — LET’S GO!
Welcome to Chippendales | Season 1 (Hulu) — before there was Magic Mike, there was Chippendales. This sprawling true-crime saga tells the outrageous story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (played by Kumail Nanjiani), an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire in 1980s Los Angeles—only to burn it all down to the ground.
Stray observations from pop culture webzine AV Club: “With songs by ABBA, the Village People, Blondie & Donna Summer, [we’re] going to need Hulu to curate for us a rocking disco playlist that assembles all the fab needle drops the series is gifting us.”
After a little research, we did come across this music soundtrack from the series, you’re welcome ;)
Criminal Minds: Evolution (Paramount Plus) — The BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) is back! FBI's elite team of criminal profilers faces their greatest threat, an UnSub who used the pandemic to build a network of serial killers; as the world opens back up the network goes operational and the team must hunt down one murderer at a time.
Original cast members include Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), Kirsten Vangsness (as mega brilliant tech analyst, Penelope Garcia), Aisha Tyler (the totally badass Dr. Tara Lewis), and Paget Brewster (slightly older, a lot sassier Emily Prentiss).
Wednesday (Netflix) — from the mind of Tim Burton. Smart, sarcastic, and a little dead inside (hello Gen-X), Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) investigates a murder spree while making new friends and foes at Nevermore Academy.
Fun Fact: Catherine Zeta-Jones’ glam spin as Morticia is totally fab and Christina Ricci (a.k.a. Wednesday Addams in 1991's cult-classic live-action film The Addams Family) has a guest role as Marilyn Thornhill, the dorm mom and botanical sciences teacher at Nevermore Academy.
Los Espookys on HBO! What a show, I've never seen anything like it. It's wonderful.
