Weekend Watch — 11/4/22
A fake Weird Al biopic + a series about the last Blockbuster premiering on Netflix... a little too ironic... don't you think?
Hey there, TueNighters! As you know, the TueNight team publishes an ah-mazing list of movie releases, series drops, and tv shows in our weekly The TueDo List newsletter.
Here in the Weekend Watch, we’re able to take a deeper dive into our recommendations and chat a little more about what we’re watching — we think it’s a fab feature and one that GALs in our community would enjoy reading, so we’re inviting EVERYONE to join the convo!
As always, thank you so much for your support.
Here are this week’s picks:
Blockbuster (Netflix) — Timmy Yoon (Randall Park) is an analog dreamer living in a 5G world. And after learning he is operating the last Blockbuster Video in America, Timmy and his staff employees (including his long-time crush, Eliza played by Melissa Fumero) fight to stay relevant. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection.
Video may have killed the radio star but this show is premiering on the very platform that helped kill all the other Blockbusters… isn't it ironic... don't you think?
Enola Holmes 2 (Netflix) — Millie Bobby Brown (a.k.a. Eleven in Stranger Things) plays the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes (portrayed by the yummy Henry Cavill) and is taking on her first-ever paid case, igniting a mystery that requires the help of her famous brother in the sequel to the hit Netflix film.
WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story (Roku) — Weird tells the "true" story of Alfred Matthew Yankovic—world-famous as "Weird Al" Yankovic—his beginning interest in the accordion, his discovery by Dr. Demento, his support from Madonna, and his overall claim to fame. A satire of the biopic genre, the film intentionally exaggerates and downright fabricates moments in Yankovic's life for comical effect.
Daniel Radcliffe (a.k.a. Harry Potter) shows his acting range as Weird Al and it looks like he’s having a buttload of fun doing it, too.
And last but not least, Amy Schumer hosts SNL (NBC, Peacock).
Reboot on Hulu is really good! I’m halfway through the season. I also need to finish up Bad Sisters on Apple+, which is really good.
Choosing weekend viewing that everyone enjoys is ridiculously hard. I wrote a blog on it once. https://caryjhansson.substack.com/p/movie-night-is-a-lie-
BUT last weekend I watched Enola Holmes with my two sons (age twenty and eleven) ... and 1) we all stayed awake to the end 2) we all really enjoyed it. Do you know how rare that is? I highly recommend. it.
