Weekend Watch — 12/23/22
Avatar: The Way of Water (or trying to hold it in during a 3+ hour movie)+ that lovin' feeling is back + Sally Field will probably make us cry (again)...
Hey there, GALs! This will be our last Weekend Watch of 2022 (we know, right?!?) so we’re sending along nothing but good vibes to TueNighters everywhere, as well.
Whatever is beautiful, whatever is meaningful, whatever brings you happiness… may it be yours this Holiday Season.
Here are this week’s picks:
Avatar: The Way of Water (Theaters) — set 10+ years after the first Avatar movie, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Ney'tiri (Zoe Saldaña) have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans. Honorary TueNighters Kate Winslet and Michelle Yeoh also star as boss scientists.
Warning: the movie is 3 hours long, so some of us will need to prepare accordingly… ahem… stupid bladder.
Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount+) — after more than thirty years of service as a top naval aviator, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot. Yet, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past when he returns to TOP GUN to train a group of elite graduates and comes face-to-face with Lt. Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his former wingman, "Goose". Bitter rivalries ignite as the pilots prepare for a specialized mission, which will require the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.
IMHO: The hubs and I actually caught this movie in theaters; it’s a good sequel (which, for me, is hard to find), the soundtrack is killer + a guaranteed adrenaline rush.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix) — Tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is put on the case. It also stars Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, and the late great Dame Angela Lansbury.
Speaking of sequels: technically, I guess it’s more of the next chapter to the first Knives Out Mystery… which I thought was awesomely hysterical…so here’s hoping.
Call the Midwife Holiday Special (PBS) — With Christmas approaching, the midwives move to their maternity clinic and are delighted when their first patient is a familiar face. Life in Poplar returns to normal after the tragic train crash, and everyone unites for a festive talent show.
Yet another warning: our newsletter editor, Laurie warns it’ll probably make you cry.
Spoiler Alert (Theaters) — a heartwarming, funny and life-affirming story of how Michael (Jim Parson’s) and Kit’s (Ben Aldridge) relationship is transformed and deepened when one of them falls ill. Sally Field stars as Kit’s mom.
Yep, it will most definitely make us cry — don’t say we didn’t warn you.
