Weekend Watch — 1/27/23
Refreshingly modern meet-the-parents story + a new Columbo-esque mystery drama + we're all for having tough conversations and generational change...
Happy Friday, GALs! The weekend's here and you know what that means, right? Time to sit back, take a breath, and catch up with what’s on our watch list — LET’S GO!
Here are this week’s picks:
You People (Netflix) —when a rideshare mix-up in LA brings Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) and Amira Mohammed (Lauren London) together, the two find themselves connecting over a shared love of streetwear and music. As they fall in love, their relationship is tested by their respective families: Ezra's progressive and semi-woke parents (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny) and Amira's unyielding yet concerned parents (Eddie Murphy and Nia Long) who inject themselves into their lives mercilessly.
Kenya Barris’ feature film directorial debut is a modern love story set amidst clashing cultures and interfaith relationships.
Poker Face (Peacock) — Natasha Lyonne stars in this inverted detective series, also known as a "howcatchem" and popularized by "Columbo," the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) as she tries to solve the mystery.
Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny.
The 1619 Project (Hulu) — Hulu’s six-part 1619 Docuseries is an expansion of “The 1619 Project” created by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and the New York Times Magazine. The series seeks to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.
Episodes are adapted from essays that appear in the book The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story and examine how slavery has shaped different aspects of American life.
Shotgun Wedding (Prime Video) —Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel (in a role originally meant for Armie Hammer, yeesh) star as Dary and Tom who gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding, just as the couple begins to get cold feet. And if that wasn't enough of a threat to the celebration, suddenly everyone's lives are in danger when the entire party is taken hostage.
Critics Consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: Shotgun Wedding may be just the invitation to escapism that rom-com fans and JLo completists are looking for — but most other viewers can safely RSVP no without regrets.
Wow, okay… we’ll see… how about you?
