Weekend Watch — 2/10/23
Remembering a couch in New York, Magic Mike's last dance and other new releases that leave us breathless...
Happy Friday, GALs! The weekend's here and you know what that means, right? Time to sit back, take a breath, and catch up with what’s on our watch list — LET’S GO!
Here are this week’s picks:
Magic Mike’s Last Dance (Theaters) —"Magic" Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida. For what he hopes will be one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek Pinault) who lures him with an offer he can't refuse... and an agenda all her own. With everything on the line, once Mike discovers what she truly has in mind, will he—and the roster of hot new dancers he'll have to whip into shape—be able to pull it off?
Badassery alert: 56-year-old Salma Hayek Pinault + her lewk for the red carpet premiere = total badass!
All That Breathes (HBO) — this stunning Oscar-nominated documentary follows two brothers (Nadeem and Saud) who devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the ‘kite brothers’ spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital. Director Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the brothers who help them return to the skies, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence.
Critics consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: A poetic tribute to tenacity, “All That Breathes” uses two brothers' tireless efforts to make a broader point about finding triumph within tragedy.
Your Place or Mine (Netflix) — Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in LA; he thrives on change in NY. When they swap houses and lives for a week they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.
The awwwww factor: Your Place or Mine will have some GALs in their feelings remembering A Couch in New York (1996).
Super Bowl LVII airs this Sunday night with Rihanna performing during the halftime show. Need we say more? [Margit note: Go Birds! 🦅]
