Weekend Watch — 4/28/23
Getting real with Oprah and Michelle Obama + tripping with devilicious Gina Gershon + Judy Blume's beloved Margaret hits the big screen and Gen-X is here for it...
TGIF, TueNighters! The weekend's here and you know what that means, right? Time to sit back, take a breath, and catch up with what’s on our watch list — LET’S GO!
Here are this week’s picks:
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (Theaters): For over fifty years, Judy Blume’s classic and groundbreaking novel has impacted generations with its timeless coming-of-age story, insightful humor, and candid exploration of life’s biggest questions. In Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn’t happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets.
We’ve been looking forward to this and, from reviews we’ve read, the movie version of the Gen-X classic does not disappoint.
Michelle Obama & Oprah Winfrey: The Light We Carry (Netflix): Former first lady Michelle Obama delves into the challenges and life lessons that shaped her book, “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times,” while in an illuminating conversation with Oprah Winfrey. Filmed live on the final stop of Mrs. O’s 2022 book tour.
From Obama’s stories about her childhood and White House moments to words of wisdom on menopause and aging the duo share many poignant observations.
White House Plumbers (HBO): From the producers of Succession and Veep, this five-part limited series imagines the behind-the-scenes story of how Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect… and their families along with it.
Proving that fact is sometimes stranger than fiction, the miniseries sheds light on the lesser-known series of events that led to one of the greatest political scandals in American history.
Awkwafina is Nora from Queens Season 3 (Comedy Central): Creator, writer, and Golden Globe winner Nora Lin (professionally known as Awkwafina) stars in this scripted series based on her real-life beginnings in Queens, New York. Raised alongside her cousin by her dad and grandma, Nora leans on her family as she navigates young adulthood in outer-borough New York City. The series also stars BD Wong, Lori Tan Chinn, and Bowen Yang.
This season’s roster of guest stars includes Jennifer Esposito, Michael Bolton, Lea DeLaria, Janeane Garofalo, Judy Gold, Ken Jeong, Frankie Muniz, and Gina Gershon as a devilish therapist-type figure in a trippy (albeit hysterical) dream sequence.
Going to see Are You There God tonight and can't wait!!
Please get into Am I Being Unreasonable on Hulu.
