Weekend Watch — 4/7/23
The women of ‘Ndrangheta + life of an Agony Aunt + a bad case of forever road rage and finding the pathos in pettiness.
TGIF, TueNighters! The weekend's here and you know what that means, right? Time to sit back, take a breath, and catch up with what’s on our watch list — LET’S GO!
Here are this week’s picks:
Beef | Season 1 (Netflix): In this dark comedy thriller created by Lee Sung Jin, a road-rage episode leads to a contentious feud between a struggling contractor (Steven Yeun) and a self-made successful entrepreneur (Ali Wong). Both can’t seem to let the altercation go, so they enter into a long-running feud that begins to impact their lives and relationships.
“Beef” received a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes — critics’ consensus: Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are a diabolically watchable pair of adversaries in Beef, a prime-cut comedy that finds the pathos in pettiness.
Transatlantic (Netflix): the true story dramatizes the efforts of Varian Fry (Cory Michael Smith), a journalist who arrives in France in 1940 with the Emergency Rescue Committee—dedicated to helping artists and writers flee the Nazis and immigrate to the United States.
Historical fact: During 13 months spent in France in 1940-41, Fry manages to arrange safe passage out of France and on to the US for more than 2000 refugees who are in danger of losing their lives.
The Good Mothers | Season 1 (Hulu): Based on a true story of women who dare to defy the Calabrian mob from Italy through the prism of three daring women inside the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime clan (mothers and wives of the top bosses) who collaborated with a female prosecutor and withstood the consequences of their attempt to escape its iron grip.
You can also read the book: The Good Mothers: The True Story of the Women Who Took On the World’s Most Powerful Mafia, Alex Perry’s Edgar Award-nominated nonfiction crime book.
Tiny Beautiful Things | Season 1 (Hulu) — inspired by Cheryl Strayed’s “Dear Sugar” column and book, Kathryn Hahn stars as a writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.
Everyone’s raving about 49-year-old Kathryn Hahn’s performance as raw, unfiltered, and excellent and we are here for it.
Yesss!! I just started watching BEEF last night, and it’s hilarious!
I’ve started watching Wellmania on Netflix and I’m torn. It has beautiful scenery but I don’t love the protagonist! Maybe I’m not supposed to? I’ll finish it but I’m on the fence about it.
