Weekend Watch — 9/23/22
Phillyisms + we'll take meet cutes with a side order of meta snark + Allison Janney is a total badass but we knew that already...
Hey there, TueNighters! As you know, the TueNight team publishes an ah-mazing list of movie releases, series drops, and tv shows in our weekly The TueDo List newsletter.
Here in the Weekend Watch, we’re able to take a deeper dive into our recommendations and chat a little more about what we’re watching — so let’s gooooo…
Here are this week's picks:
Lou (Netflix) — thinking she'd put her dangerous past behind her, Lou (Allison Janney) finds her quiet life interrupted when a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to save her kidnapped daughter. As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.
Hellyeah, I’m here for 62yo Allison Janney as a tough-as-nails-badass antihero.
We All Scream (Netflix) — Patton Oswalt is back with his FOURTH Netflix comedy special and his FIRST directorial debut. The 53yo comic riffs on the hazards of aging, his failed shutdown plans and the day his wife turned into a Valkyrie.
Fun fact: Oswalt also voices Matthew the Raven in The Sandman series.
Reboot | Season 1 (Hulu) — an early 2000s family sitcom is rebooted, and the dysfunctional cast must deal with their unresolved issues in today's fast-changing world. With an all-star cast including Judy Greer, Johnny Knoxville, Keegan-Michael Key and Paul Reiser.
The comedy series throws major meta-snark at reboots and it looks hilarious.
Abbott Elementary | Season 2 (Hulu) — a group of dedicated, passionate teachers -- and a slightly tone-deaf principal -- find themselves thrown together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life.
And, like the first, this season is said to bring plenty of Philly references with it.
Meet Cute (Peacock) — when Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) and Gary (Pete Davidson) meet, it’s love at first sight. Until we realize their magical date wasn’t fate at all. Sheila’s got a time machine, and they've been falling in love over and over again. But when the perfect night is never quite enough, Sheila travels to Gary’s past to change him into the perfect man.
It’s Ground Hog Day with shades of 50 First Dates BUT I’m not so sure about the chemistry between Davidson and Cuoco (love her!). Then again, I can’t say I’m a fan of Davidson either.
Blonde (Netflix) — Ana de Armas (Knives Out, The Gray Man) plays Marilyn Monroe in this fictional portrait, reimagining the tumultuous private life of the Hollywood legend and the price she paid for fame.
Critics Consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: Blonde can be hard to watch as it teeters between commenting on exploitation and contributing to it, but Ana de Armas' luminous performance makes it difficult to look away.
Sidney (Theaters and Apple TV+) — the Oprah-produced documentary honors Sidney Poitier and his legacy as an iconic actor, filmmaker and activist at the center of Hollywood and the Civil Rights Movement. Featuring candid interviews with Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Robert Redford, Lenny Kravitz, Barbra Streisand, Spike Lee and many more.
Always love this weekly dose of amazement.
