Weekend Watch: December 22, 2023
A maestro's life, tales of redemption, and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood...
Hey there! This will be our last Weekend Watch of 2023 (we know, right?!?) so we’re sending along nothing but good vibes to TueNighters everywhere.
Whatever is beautiful, whatever is meaningful, whatever brings you happiness… may it be yours this Holiday Season.
Here are this week’s picks:
Maestro (Netflix): A towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carrie Mulligan). A love letter to life and art, Maestro at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love.
Critics Consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: Led by a pair of powerful performances, Maestro serves as a stirring overview of a tremendous talent's life and legacy.
Rebel Moon - Part One | A Child of Fire (Netflix): An epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. After crash-landing on a distant moon, Kora (Sofia Boutella) starts a new life among peaceful farmers. When their colony faces a threat from a tyrannical force, Kora becomes their best hope for survival.
Tasked with assembling a team of trained fighters to stand against the Mother World, Kora gathers a diverse group — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and war orphans from different worlds, all seeking redemption and revenge. The newly formed team must learn to trust each other and unite against the Motherworld's armies to survive.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Theaters): In his relentless quest for vengeance, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) intensifies his efforts to defeat Aquaman (Jason Momoa). Armed with the formidable Black Trident and its ancient malevolent power, Black Manta poses a greater threat than ever. To stop him, Aquaman seeks an alliance with his imprisoned brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), the former King of Atlantis. Despite their differences, they must unite to safeguard their kingdom, protect Aquaman's family, and prevent irreversible destruction of the world.
The cast includes: Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis and mother of the heir to the throne, Nicole Kidman as Aquaman's mother, Atlanna, along with Dolph Lundgren reprising the role of King Nereus.
The Color Purple (Theaters): A story of love and resilience based on the novel and the Broadway musical, this adaptation is a decades-spanning tale of one woman's journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.
This bold new take on the beloved classic stars Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Halle Bailey as Nettie, and Fantasia Barrino (in her major motion picture debut) as Celie.
In case you missed in theaters — because, you know, crowds:
The acclaimed film Saltburn is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
You can now catch the blockbuster Barbie on Max.
Disclaimer: While we *think* these shows and movies might be worth checking out, there are no guarantees they'll all be your jam. It's always best to trust your own instincts.
Blew through all eps of Carol and the End of the World after it landed last week. It was charming and weird and existential, heartfelt and bold, and dark and hopeful all at the same time. A whirlwind of emotions, plenty of tears, lots of reflective thoughts whirling through my brain. 4/4 Though perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, it was one of the best things I’ve seen this year. Highly recommended.
The first Aquaman movie was SO BAD. Not even shirtless Jason Momoa could save it. I’m avoiding this one.
I want to see American Fiction! I’m not sure it’s going to make it to my small city, though
