Weekend Watch: October 6, 2023
Dicks on Broadway, monsters in California, and Gen-Z goes back to the 80s... sounds like a blast!
Hey there, TueNighters! As we gear up for the weekend, we're back with an incredible lineup of new movie releases and exciting series premieres, all spotlighted on this week's TueDo List.
There's so much to unpack here, so let's dive right in!
Here are this week’s picks:
Totally Killer (Prime): Thirty-five years after the shocking murders of three teens, an infamous killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. When 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) comes face-to-face with the masked maniac, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture, Jamie teams up with her teenage mother to take down the psycho once and for all.
It's kinda like Gen-Z's spin on Back to the Future, with a dash of Scream, and it looks like an absolute blast!
Beckham (Netflix): This four-part documentary series tells the inside story of a global football star and cultural icon. David Beckham is one of the most known names on the planet, yet few people know who he really is. From his humble working-class beginnings in east London, his drive and determination to win, and the battle to find balance between ambition, love and family, David’s story is one of immense ups and downs. The series takes you on that rollercoaster and builds a surprising, personal and definitive story of one of the most recognizable and scrutinized athletes of all time.
Director Fisher Stevens and producer John Battsek are granted unprecedented access to David, his wife Victoria, his family, his friends and his team-mates. The result is an intimate portrait of a man as well as a chronicle of late-modern sports and celebrity culture.
Our Flag Means Death, Season 2 (HBO Max): After trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, an 18th-century British nobleman, Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. In Season 2, the crew crosses paths with the legendary female pirate Anne Bonny. Meanwhile, Bonnet and Blackbeard work on resolving their differences.
Fun fact: Taika Waititi plays Blackbeard and we are here for it!
Fair Play (Netflix): When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, once supportive exchanges between lovers Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) begin to sour into something more sinister.
Bridgerton enthusiasts will undoubtedly remember Phoebe Dynevor: best known for her portrayal of Daphne, the fourth Bridgerton sibling, whose chemistry with her onscreen husband, The Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), was positively electric in the Netflix period drama Bridgerton.
Monsters of California (Theaters): After discovering research left behind by a missing government agent, Dallas Edwards (Jack Samson) and his misfit high school friends embark on a righteous and dangerous adventure to uncover a paranormal conspiracy in Southern California that brings them face-to-face with some of the government's most guarded mysteries.
Fun fact: Directed by Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge, the singer-guitarist wanted to make an R-rated Amblin movie with his directorial debut, which combines many of his passions, from San Diego County and skateboarding to punk rock and the paranormal.
Dicks: The Musical (Theaters): Two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents (Megan Mullally and Nathan Lane), in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles (Seinfeld, Borat) also starring Megan Thee Stallion, and Bowen Yang as God.
Okay, we’re in! Now it’s your turn…
