I’ve seen a meme going around about adults needing the summers off and I agree! But then I think about the workers in service jobs that we rely on to keep everything going smoothly and at a fraction of the wages they should earn and I realize that summers off and even any time off are pipe dreams for those of us who live in this stupid, capitalist America

I spent 30 years working in food service and retail. Weekends? To quote Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey, "What is a weekend?"

My most recent post - yesterday - was a brutally honest one about my mother and the fallout I've experienced from her death earlier this year. I have more than likely placed myself on my step siblings shit list as a result. It's the price you pay as a writer, not everyone is going to love what you write about.

(The short version is that my mother was mentally and emotionally abusive to me my entire life. She was on her best behavior to everyone else. Few people saw how she treated me. I don't miss her and don't feel guilty about it. )

My mother, still alive, was the same, Kim. (I say "was" because I no longer have a relationship with her.) So perfect and lovely to everyone she wanted to impress. Utterly awful to me (and sometimes her brothers). My brother (younger) never got a hint of that. It was all saved for me. Very sorry you suffered that. Hopefully, you'll feel that weight lifting knowing that she can't do it anymore. And absolutely zero guilt. xo
