I love my Anvanda bag. I got it about 5 years ago when they launched on Kickstarter and it's held up to both me AND my daughter carting stuff around. It's mostly canvas with vegan leather accents. https://anvanda.com/collections/all
I mainly use it with the shoulder strap because that's what I prefer, but there are backpack straps as well that you can swap out as needed.

I have had a Holly Aiken backpack - vegan leather - for 3-4 years that I use regularly that looks the exact same as the day I bought it (and I am not precious with it at all). It can carry a decent amount (more purse size than bookbag size though). https://hollyaiken.com/
I guess I need more info on what is meant by “professional.” I use a Patagonia black hole backpack and also have the PRVK by Wandrd. Those are nicer commuter backpacks but not Kate Spade-y fancy.
I use a tote but would love to switch to a backpack that works when traveling - following!!
